Richmond, Virginia
Not only known to be the capital but also as the heart of Virginia, Richmond is a diverse city, surrounded by historic neighborhoods, parks and a thriving James River. The city consistently ranks among “The Best Places to Live and Work in America” in several national publications. Being a historical area, Richmond consists of many memorials, statues, and venues of the past. In Richmond, from St. John’s Episcopal Church — the host to the Second Virginia Convention in 1775 where Patrick Henry made his famous, “give me liberty or give me death” speech — to the statues of Monument Avenue, history continues to be a major draw to Richmond for visitors and residents alike. Richmond is also known to hold many presidents and famous advocates which lay down to rest in the Hollywood Cemetery. Of course, Richmond has its beautiful downtown area that consists of many restaurants, bars, art spaces, and many dance venues. Richmond is also a place for shopping; Carytown is known to be one of Richmond’s most popular attractions with diverse dining experiences, unique shops and boutiques. Being home to the #1 public art school in the country, Richmonders are able to enjoy and experience cutting edge art from high art galleries to DIY basement music and art shows. Richmond can also welcome visitors with open arms with hotels located in many places in Richmond whether be it downtown or somewhere near the Virginia Commonwealth University campus.
Virginia Commonwealth University +++ VCU Website
Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) was founded in 1968 and just recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary of the Monroe Park Campus this past Fall 2008. Virginia Commonwealth University is the largest university in Virginia and ranks among the top universities in the country in sponsored research. Located on two downtown campuses in Richmond, VCU enrolls more than 32,000 students in 208 certificate and degree programs in the arts, sciences and humanities. Sixty-five of the programs are unique in Virginia, many of them crossing the disciplines of VCU’s 15 schools and one college. MCV Hospitals and the health sciences schools of Virginia Commonwealth University compose the VCU Medical Center, one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers. Virginia Commonwealth University is particularly recognized for its nationally ranked School of the Arts (#1 public university school of arts and design, #4 overall according to U.S. News & World Report), mass communications, social work, health administration, and medical degree programs.
Compared to other universities, not only can students enjoy one campus, they enjoy two at Virginia Commonwealth University. At VCU, students get the feel of a very versatile student experience from having both Monroe Park Campus and MCV Medical campus. Being located in the capital of Virginia can also be beneficial to students, experiencing historical venues that VCU has embraced as their own. The Monroe Park Campus also holds the Landmark Theater that features many concerts of both local and nationwide known artists and productions such as The Nutcracker and Wicked.
